Waiting

Water, water, water; why can't it just rain for once here, just like how it does at all those other places the other guys told me about. These were the words going through young David's mind as he left the ruins of the old mansion at dusk in search of water for the next two days. There were three places David knew of, where water can often be found. The one David was heading to was the closest of the 3,a good 20 minutes walk from the ruins.
All that David was wearing was a torn, shabby full Tee, and some worn baggy pants; this was what he has been wearing ever since his been here.David had to be careful,  the desert never stops changing, and getting lost out here means only one thing. David and all the others have to travel under the moonlight as you wouldn't last an hour out during the day.
David arrived at the place. It was a small, spring fed water hole no more than a metre in diameter. It was located at the bottom of two towering dunes of sand and was surrounded by small shrubs and a lonely palm tree. When David got to the hole there was only about a bucket or so worth of water but it would be enough as all David had to transport the water was an old, rust covered watering can which somehow made its way to the mansions ruins. After filling the can and having a quick drink, David was soon heading back to the place he had left 20 minutes before. As David approached the ruins old, rotting, pine wood door he noticed 2 of the other 10 or so boys he shared with coming back as well. Both seemed to be sharing the load of some sort of animals' carcass. If this was the case, all of the gang will be having full stomachs for the next week or so.
When David walked in he was greeted by yet another one of the roofs panels almost squashing him as flat as a stone and some commentary by one of David's best housemates, Sam, the second oldest of the 10 boy's at 16 years of age who is only topped by John at 21 or so he says. The way things work around here is the older you are, the more power you posses. This puts young David, who's 9, right at the bottom of the pecking order only having more power then Vincent who thinks his 10 but is more like 6.
"Sam, can you refresh my mind on how we got here and why we are still here?"Politely asked David.
"Well, we we got here via our stupid pilot trying to fly a fully loaded 747 through some volcanoes ash cloud, then crashing somewhere over there and us guys are the only ones that got out before it exploded."said Sam.
"And why are we still here?"Asked David.
"we're still here because we're still waiting for those people that are meant to rescue us." Answered Sam.
"And why don't we just find some other way of  getting out of here?" Asked David once more.
"Because it's not like a radar dude could miss a 747 crashing, or could he?." Questioned Sam.
"I don't know, but That doesn't matter right now cause look what we have here." Said David.
"Shots the rump!" yelled out Chris.

Learning about authors

1. Michael Hyde has designed his sight to appeal to readers by creating a very simple page with a main focus on some interesting images which relate to a story placed alongside them.

Eoin Colfer
2. Michael Gerad Bauer started writing during his breaks from teaching English at secondary schools.Michael Hyde was also an English teacher when he started his writing career. James Roy started professionally writing when he got sick of his job and wanted to see if he could be as good a writer as his literary idols.

3. The two authors I chose for this task are, Eoin Colfer and Andy Griffith.

Eoin (Which is pronounced as Owen) is probably most known for his highly acclaimed "Artimis Fowl," series which started way back in 2001. Eoin has also written many other successful titles which include "And another thing..." which was written as the 6 th and final instalment in "The Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy," series. Eoin was asked to write this as the author of the first five installments, Douglas Adams, sadly passed away in 2001.
Andy Griffith would have to have to most outrageous style of writing I've ever read. With some of his books  averaging about 6 words a page and having a whole series of books which involve someone's bum playing as the main character, his talent as an author is questionable. But regardless of this, his books are still very popular and are quite "fun," to read.

Douglas Adams

4. Douglas Adams was born in Cambridge, England during the march of  1952 and passed away in may, 2001. After leaving college he was determined to break into TV and Radio as a writer. From then on Douglas Adams worked in this media but it never really was enough. It wasn't until Douglas wrote "The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy," that made him a recognised author and with it being a smash hit, Douglas continued his career as an author writing four more continuations of Hitchhikers and some appearances on radio as well as writing a few other titles until he sadly passed away in 2001.

Electronic literature

Electronic literature is all around us. Every time you go on a computer, use your phone, check your emails or use an eBook you are using electronic literature. I personally much prefer reading from a book then a computer screen but with technology these days becoming more and more important in our everyday lives, electronic literature is going to take a bigger part in it as well. This is what I think about electronic literature and books.A book has a personality, something electronic literature could never have. You could pick up any odd book in a library and instantly get a feel for it that only that book has. But with electronic literature, it's always the exact same old boring light behind a screen. With a book you can go through the motion of tuning a real ink covered paper page, something electronic literature can only pretend to do at the best. And one thing that books will always have over electronic literature is the ability to smell the pages (I have a habit of always smelling the pages of a book at one time or another). But I still do read quite a lot of electronic literature but not in large chunks at a time (I'm not sure about you but I always good watery eyes if I look at a computer screen for too long).

The design on the cover

One of the most important selling tools for a book is the design on the cover. It is so important because it is the first part of a book you see. Say you were just skimming over the shelves in a library not in search of any particular book, the one your most likely to pick up would be the one that is most visually appealing to you. It is also important that the design has relevence to the story so that people can get a rough idea about what the story is about or at least what the genre is so that people don't pick up the book expecting it to be something that it's not. When I have no idea what i'm looking for in a library I tend to pick up books based on what their cover looks like. But for me, the design of a books cover usually isn't enough;  so I would have a look at the title and a read of the blurb before I would make the decision.

The Cave

" Wow"
" That is one heck of a cave. How far do you reckon it goes?".
"No idea, so you say you haven't been in yet?"
"Nup."
"So what did we bring?"
" Ummmm, 3 flash lights, a box of matches, some rope and afternoon tea."
" Why the rope?"
" I dunno, let's just get going cause I wanna be back for dinner."

4 hours later
It was getting really late now and The boys had no idea where they were going. With hardly any food or water, Bob's Flash-light already out of battery and Bills starting to flicker, the three boys were soon going to be lighting matches and drawing straws . By this time Ben was starting to panic and Bill was speaking gibberish to himself. Why did they go into the cave was the question on all there minds. Then suddenly Ben who was leading the three disappeared followed by Bill who was followed by Bob.
A few moments later Ben shouted"Get off me !"
"What just happened?" said Bob quickly.
"Well you just landed on top of me and your still on top of me, so get off" Shouted Ben once more.
Meanwhile Bill had managed to find the good flash light and was soon able to paint a picture of what happened." It appears we have fallen into a hole and ...HELLO  what do we have here?
"What is it?" asked Bob.
" It looks like we just landed next to some sort of door."
"Open it." said Bob
" Why don't you?" said Bill
"Why Don't you?" said Bob
Ben realising that the conversation wasn't going to end opened the door and what laid before their eyes  left 2 of them speechless gasping for words except Bob who proudly said
"Now aren't you two glad I said to bring that rope."

Reading experiences

I sometimes think of myself as one of those people that are just born to read and can read any book around with ease. But although I like to think this, the reality is that I would almost always turn down the opportunity to read in favour of lazier forms of entertainment such as video games or TV. This is what cause my late night reading habits where just as I get into bed to go to sleep I feel like I should have been reading. So I end up reading basically until I can't keep my eyes open any more. This is a bad habit and makes reading a less enjoyable experience; something that I need to change.
But I still do read during other, more enjoyable times of the day where my urge to find a good place to read takes me to some unusual places. Probably the most unusual place was at the top of a tree reading the third instalment of Eion Colfers best-selling series Artemis Fowl. What made me pick a tree I still don't know but in the time it took for my sisters interview to end I had read almost two-hundred pages of text; something I still don't know how I managed to do
There are 3 different ways for me to choose a book; Slowly walk around looking for something that grabs my attention OR Go looking for a title, series or author that someone has recommended OR probably the most unusual tactic I've adopted, saying a random number and picking a random shelf and counting that many books from the end. I found my favourite book of all time by using this unusual tactic. It was called "The horn of mortal danger." by Lawrence Leonard.
